It's all IMO.My thoughts, on games, life and everything else. Staff writer, podcast host and game player. Go check out www.britxbox.co.uk January 20 The Project LivesGo here: http://climbingshrimp.blogspot.com/
NOW!
The project lives. The show is Dork in Your Eye, the production company is Climbing Shrimp.
Go check out the new site. I doubt I shall be here much at all now. So check the new place more!
Already I have some cool posts in the blog, the pilot is recorded. I will be sticking it up soon. Expect it tomorrow if all goes well.
January 14 The ProjectThe Project lives. I have got myself a compatriot, an ally, a contributor, he will at least add his voice to the Project (small t big P).
You are thinking what is the Project, well it is something I have been thinking about for some time, now I have finally started to develop it. I know that is not clear, but certain things will need to align. First the monies will need to be arranged, then things can be built. I have a lovely design doc sitting on my PC as I type this, it talks of vaulted principle and deep thought, it speaks of fun and games. This will be my production, it will be independent and that thrills and excites me, its content my own, my baby, shaped as I see fit, I have the final control, cue evil laugh. Much work is ahead, I have gathered a force already, but I need others, others with graphical skills, they shall come, they were born too. I even have some girls, for more than just dancing, at the moment. Over the next few weeks, hopefully not to long I shall elaborate on what this is. How it will shape, even its name and the name of the company behind it. I will be covering much of what I want to, much of what I like, this will be formless within a structure, but not so out there that it can't be grasped. It shall be more than one thing in the end. There will be plugs, there will be creation, but I doubt there will be profit, things are afoot, are you more excited or worried, most likely you don't care. But I do, the Project is mine and soon, soon it will arrive. Long live the Project, join us. December 16 Tis the season to be jolly...
November 26 Talking about Reviews and other Feldercarp
October 14 Moving house, back pains and reviews.Things have been very slow recently, when it comes to games and gaming news at least. Most people, and I am not different have been obsessed with one game since it came out. That game is of course Halo 3. If you aren’t even a gamer, and maybe you have never even heard of a Xbox 360, you have still probably heard of Halo 3. Anyway, this isn't about Halo 3, this is partly about my neglect of other responsibilities, such as BXB and the review I still aint done for the site. It is coming, but I don't feel comfortable putting a review forward without the proper play time on the game or the time to write something half decent. It's odd. I know what I do for the site is voluntary, I know that 'real life' commitments come first, but I still feel guilty about not having time to get the review done. Hopefully next week I shall have time, but that is something I have been saying for a while. When I agreed to do the review I had no idea that I would be moving house as soon as I am, hell I didn’t even have a new place to move to. If I had known I would have declined the review. But that’s the brilliance of hindsight. On top of moving house, scarily tomorrow, I have also been suffering from a new and very annoying back problem. It just wont go away, whatever I did to my back seems to be lingering and only getting more annoying and debilitating. Having back problems is a real bitch, it makes you feel utterly useless and afraid to do anything a man of 24 should be able to do. But back to moving. I and my lovely fiancé (she has told me I have to call her that :-)) are moving from a very nice cosy apartment with one bedroom, just sadly to small now, into a huge, three bedroom semi detached house. It will be a big change and a move forward for us. I am more excited than apprehensive and things are finally starting to look nearly ready for the move. So I will probably blog again after the move is done and as soon as my net connection is moved to the new house, hopefully that wont be long. September 10 Done and dusted...So I have got all my content done for the site, at least for now. I will be recording a podcast tomorrow night but its great to see so much of my content currently up on the front page of the site. It's been hard work and it's nice to have it all done at last. The next few weeks for gaming are going to be great. I am still really enjoying Bioshock and the newly released MOH: Airborne and this Friday sees the release of Stranglehold, one of my most hotly anticipated titles of the year. Then a week and a half after Stranglehold we have the largest entertainment release, ever. The one and only Halo 3. To say I am excited about that would be an understatement. I can't wait to get my hands on the game in all it's glory. It's going to be an experience I hope I wont forget. Then coming November another two huge titles are gonna be landing. Both Assassins Creed and Mass Effect are looking fantastic, my previews of them really filling me with excitement. This holiday season is perhaps the best yet for gaming and I havn't even mentioned it all yet. MOH: Airborne though has been a massive surprise for me. Bought on a whim and never having enjoyed the MOH games that much, especially in comparison to the COD series this has gripped me. I love the para dropping, the challenge of it and the way in which the weapons feel. It's a great fun game and I highly recommend it. Until you hear from me on the podcast... September 01 Sick yeterday... Sick today... Sick tomorrow? So in general not so great. This obviously means I won't be online a lot or doing much writing, though by hook or by crook I want another preview done by the end of tomorrow. The reason for this is that I have a crazy work filled week ahead of me. Which blows hard. I feel like I am letting the guys down a bit with the slowness of my content, but there aint really anything I can do. I think I am sick partly because last week was so intense (to borrow a word). When you are at work all day, get home at about 7 then bed at 11 that leaves just 4 hours to actually do anything. I of course want to spend time with my fiancé, relax a bit, maybe if I am lucky play a game or even watch a film. So today and this evening are all gonna be about my relaxing and trying to get some energy back, this means I wont be about much. My brain certainly aint in the place to write a preview. Anyway, this was gonna be a short message, but it became a lot longer... I'll be back. August 29 PreviewsWell if you head over to BXB now you will see I have a preview for Mass Effect up. Read it, it took ages to write. When you are there check out the Star Wars the Force Unleashed Q&A with the questions thought up and asked by me! Best moment of the show easily! My second preview, this one for Assassins Creed is being proofed and edited now. So expect to see that tomorrow. I love writing previews/reviews anything really as it gives me a chance to hone my skills. But my god I am so busy with my real work ATM I feel that my writing aint at it's best. Anyway, I will next be tackling a preview of Kane and Lynch: Dead Men. I really enjoyed getting on that on at the show, it will be a shorter easier piece to write as I didn't actually get to talk to any devs about it. It will just be my thoughts on what I played. After that I have a few more. I hope to have most of them done by Sunday, but I don’t want to spend every waking minute doing it. I do after all have a wonderful Fiancé to spend time with. August 25 Blogging from the train...
As I write this I am sitting on my train, waiting for it to depart from the airport back to Cambridge.
It’s been a great few days and I really wanna put a shout out to the guys who came with me and who I met for the first time.
Mike (Janus) a sound bloke who wars so hard for the site it’s unreal. Most people just don’t see the work he puts in, but over the last few days I really have. He will never stop working for the site and motivating others to do the same. His dedication is unparalleled, not to mention his wit, which just last night has us all falling over with laughter.
Mark (Slicker) is funny in a very dry way. For an 18 year old he is more House like than anyone I know. He worked tirelessly for content and really hit the show floor getting hands on with as many games as possible and at the same time getting as many bags as he could.
Andy (Reaper) to many he is the unsung hero of BXB. If Mike is undervalued Andy’s contribution is often unknown. Working hard to get and maintain contacts and post AAA level content while still getting the beers in is a skill and a challenge. One I think he deserves more credit for.
I just hope that the effort I out in over the last few days matches the effort of these guys, if it does you guys, the users of the site should see some truly excellent content. I would gladly do it all again with these guys. Who knows what the future will bring in terms of content and possibility, I look forward to finding out and getting my hands on as many more games as possible.
See you over the horizon…
August 24 It’s all over…So we have come to the end of our time in Germany.
It has been a fun trip, there is no doubt, but before I reminisce, let me talk about the last day of our time at Leipzig.
Two words sum up the last day for me. MASS… EFFECT.
Yes that’s right, it was there, it was press only and yes I got to see it and enjoy a detailed presentation on it! I wont say anymore here, as that will all be covered in my preview, but damn, that shit is cool!
Another big thing for today was Halo 3. We got hands on the Epsilon build of the game and played around 30 minutes of Sandtrap. Again I won’t go into detail, but it was good. The only issue was the poorly set up 360 pods the game was on; it did not make the visuals look very good at all and would easily put off someone if this was there first time on the game.
For Halo 3, I really noticed the power of the press. Flashing our passes and a Bungie business card we quickly skipped the line, a good hour long line and got onto the game immediately. We were then allowed to stay on past the normal amount of time. You feel a bit guilty about this, but it is after all while were there, and we have a job to do.
After that we got some intimate time with Rock Band. I enjoyed it, with an amazing track list this game could rock hard. The BXB Band played Creep, and I enjoyed the experience. I don’t think the controller is on par with the GH one though, check the preview for more on that.
So, that was our last day. It was well worth it. The whole show was well worth it. We had things we wanted to cover and we got them all, without exception, plus a lot more on top. I have a total of six preview to compile and all kinds of other things to bring together.
Expect the content to show up on the site all next week and maybe into the next. We don’t want to swamp you guys, there is plenty there and you can be certain we are the only site who will give you the best, most honest and down right British take on the awesome games of LZ07! August 23 So much content to come!Today was a better day.
After the chaos and disorganised mayhem of yesterday with its taxi problems, delays and general nackeredness today was a breath of fresh air.
Now knowing where everything was, knowing what to wear due to the heat in the giant green house that is the convention centre and knowing what to take everything went very very well.
I now have some seriously cool content to get up onto the site. Including previews of Assassins Creed, the surprisingly cool Need for Speed Pre Street, Half Life 2 Orange Box and Ace Combat 6. There is one other thing that has made my trip, but I won’t say here as it's a great Q&A and an awesome surprise for all the geeks out there.
What this means is lots and lots of writing, so much so that I won’t be going to the convention centre tomorrow. With all my appointments done and dusted I can now focus on getting some content done. I feel that I have played all the games I wanted to and I don’t need a day fighting my way through the public to get on any more.
This has so far been a really extraordinary experience, fun isn't the correct word, but it's certainly one I am glad to have taken part in.
Oh and on a non game related issue I and Andy (Reaper) went on an adventure this evening. After finishing off our day we were meant to go to an Ubisoft PR event, but it didn’t happen. So we went and got a taxi. Telling the driver "Drink, good drink." We ended up in town utterly lost and confused. But somehow our senses of direction were acute and we ended up at the train station we first got to on day 1. Well this was the most amazing station we had ever seen. Partly done to our hunger and exhaustion the Pizza Hut we then enjoyed was some of the best food we have ever had. The station was part station and part mall by the way!
Anyway I am glad I had a chance to see some of the real Leipzig!
Until later.
August 22 Mass has no effect...
Well, the first day of the show is done, and guess what, I am the first person to blog about it. My god, that was a long day. From the 6:30 AM start though to not getting back until after 21:00! I am truly shattered. To some up my first day feelings for the event, underwhelmed, though I hope that doesn't make me sound like a wanker, it is still an amazing show. I have got my hands on some interesting titles, from Kane and Lynch to the new Turok with Guitar Hero III in between. I got to see a lot more of Assassins Creed and I hope to have the preview up soon! But, the biggest let down came from Mass Effect. After MS telling us it would be at the show and playable (as well as Halo Wars) it was no where to be found. It's possible its behind doors somewhere only being shown to the 'important' journalists but it was not on the show floor, trust me, I looked. Though I am not going to let that spoil my day, or for that matter the show! Expect lots of content from all four of us, with my Assassins Creed preview, Fallout 3 (Slicker), Call of Duty 4 and Guitar Hero III (Mike) and Pro Evolution (Andy) being things from only today! We have lots more besides. I know Slick is doing the Turok hands on and I shall be bringing you Kane and Lynch Dead Men Walking! I also got some time on the PS3 today. Sony have a huge presence at the show, easily dwarfing MS. Heavenly Sword was fun and familiar but Haze was a little disappointing. So now, I sign of with no Mass Effect and a late night ahead of me with Altair. August 21 Germany, lots of travelling...Well we are here, finally. Lots and lots of travelling. From trains, to planes and then some auto mobiles. As I write this I am in the hotel dining room, which is very quiet except from us four. The day has been long but good, meeting the guys for the first time was eye opening to say the least! We are all tired, but hey, thats the way it goes, the excitement is palatable about tomorrow and whats to come. Our perception of the foreign country is hilarious, every few miles a comment regarding the 'silly' names crop up. The conference is advertised all over the city, something you wouldn't get in the UK, it's great to see the differences. One thing of note was the landing from the very short flight. We very nearly all died in a horrible fire ball, of that I'm sure. I have never experienced such a harsh landing. When the gear 'touched' down it felt like they would be shooting up through the fuselage and appearing in the cabin! Anyway, things aint really happened yet, I am currently drinking some nice German beer and will soon be eating our evening meal, make sure you check back tomorrow, cos thats when things kick off. D-Day, maybe not the best thing to call it...
So the day has finally come. As I blog this I am 30 mins away from starting my trip. Everything is packed and prepped. My taxi arrives in half an hour, then a short train journey of 40 mins, then hours at the airport, as always, then a 3 hour flight. After that things get a bit more sketchy. Will probably take less than 2 hours from Altenburg to the hotel, near Leipzig. After that, well you will have to wait and see. A late edition to my packing was my DS... I am shocked I omitted it for so long, its looking at my in a sad way, a last minute charge giving it some life for the trip. So, my next blog should be from Germany, as long as everything goes well! August 20 Ready, set...
Go very soon. All packed now, all prepped and very psyched. I am still bantering back and forth on the forums, something I enjoy, most of the time. I do think people take me totally out of context sometimes though, I guess that's because people don't get me sense of humour. Sometimes I do take things too seriously or I don't see the humour in things, but maybe that's down to me putting in more hours on the site compared to the regular visitor. Can't complain though, that is the nature of the internet, being taken the wrong way is just one of those dangers, one I have gotten used to more and more. I have got to the point where I don't really care any more. I do find myself sometimes editing my own thoughts and speech to make them more palatable, diplomacy, something I must have got from my degree. The nature of news in the video game industry is typical of entertainment news the world over. Full of rumours, gossip, inaccuracies and hearsay. It makes me laugh a little when people think its all about fact and should never involve any of the above. People take the industry to seriously in some ways. I mean it is entertainment, it is meant to be fun and yet that fun can easily be sucked out of it. I know how actually working inside the industry can be less than fun, it is a grind, its just like any other job, regular hours, boring and stupid bosses, you name it, no different from any other office. But what can lift it above that is the fact that the work your doing is on something you enjoy, even love. That's what brought me back to BXB (after some time away and a general disinterest in games) with an interest in participating. However much I can get pissed with games and the industry I always come back, it's what I love, other than my fiance. So... Until I have some actual Leipzig things to talk about... It's Germany, so what do you do?Drink. That would be the obvious answer, not play Video Games. While of course the vast majority of our time will be spent playing games and then of course writing about them, I'll be dammed if we don’t get time to have a pint or ten. As the first time I have ever been to Germany (but just about everywhere else in Europe) I wont want to miss out on the booze. I am hoping that there might be some free beverages available, but just in case the spending money being taken has been increased for the Alcohol. I will do my best to stop myself from posting drunken blogs, but this might just have to be the upshot of a late night in the bar. Oh and expect some funny pics to make there way on here as well. Perhaps. Anyway, fun and somewhat dangerous times ahead, I hate taking off and landing, in a plane and on a night out. August 19 T minus 2 days...And so we approach take off. I have now got everything sorted except for the packing of clothes, also known as the boring bit. As we get closer to take off the excitement is building up. I can't help but think about the games I will be playing. Having been told that Mass Effect will be there on day 1 (press day) to play I was excited and now knowing that the game won't see a release in the UK until December I feel really lucky to be trying it so early. It of course adds some pressure. I have been tasked to write up the hands on for this, so I am going to have to make sure it covers the things people want to read. On top of that tomorrow I am looking at a new place to live as well as organising a few last minute things. So it’s all go here, and I’ll be honest, I don’t have a lot to add right now, but soon I will have more to write about than I will have time to put up! Until then... August 18 Questions that need answers...So what have I been doing for a while now... Writing questions for the show. I have taken some great community suggested stuff and added that to my own, some games are easier than others. Some games I just don't know enough about to ask questions. So for those research is being done. I am really looking forward to what is to come. Not just to playing the games but experiencing the atmosphere of such a huge convention. All the people there just for games, it should be pretty unreal. I cant wait to talk to some of these developers face to face as it were. The games I have 1 on 1 sessions with are: Assassins Creed - Easily one of the most anticipated titles of the year from Ubisoft. Need for Speed Pro Street - The latest in the very successful franchise from EA. The Orange Box - A truly next gen experience for all the Half Life 2 fans, well we hope so. Includes the original game, both episode 1 and 2, team fortress and portal. Ace Combat 6 - Of which at this point I know the least. I do know I really enjoyed the demo and look forward to seeing more. Anyway, those are the game I will be doing previews for. I will also be doing a hands on with Mass Effect. That game is at the top of my list for this entire year, even beating Halo 3, so I am more than a little bit excited about that! More updates to follow... August 17 Its been a long time, but its PRE SHOW!I only ever seem to post very very randomly, but anyway, lets get strait into it.
So we are rapidly approacting blast off to Leipzig. For anyone who doesn't know thats the now biggest games convention in the world. I can't wait. I know for a fact I will be play Mass Effect, Assassins Creed and the Half Life 2 Orange Box. At the show will also be Halo 3, Halo Wars and much much more. Good times I think. On the downside I have been dealing with more negative remarks and feelings aimed at me from the site. It's something I have got used to dealing with now, it's something that becomes more common as you become more of a presence, people notice you more. It's still never pleasant, but I just hit it head on and move past it. I am as we speak sorting out the question and points I want to raise to the developers at the show, and of course doing the regular and somewhat boring job of packing and remembering stuff. Anyway, I plan on posting here more as the show gets even closer (I fly next week, Tuesday) and perhaps even during the show if I can find time around writing content for the site. Until then... |
